About Me

👋 Hi there! I'm Joy Paulsen (they/them), a data scientist, engineer, and creative technologist based in Minneapolis, MN. I care deeply about building things that matter with quality. I'm currently leading projects focused on personalization through machine learning at REI.

Work

At REI, I lead data science projects focused on personalization and marketing. Some of my current areas of focus are marketing channel optimization, ML-powered products, and tools for experimental design.

Previously, my team at Target built automated systems and tools to classify products into semantically meaningful themes. I also worked on building performant streaming applications to power personalization as well as recommendation systems that were integrated into several different products during my time at Target.

Before that, I worked as a data scientist at C.H. Robinson, a third-party logistics (3PL) provider. I ended my time there managing a team focused on building recommentation systems and search engine capabilities for their flagship app. My first few years centered around time-series analysis, pricing forecasts, and market dynamics.
